Otherwise the pols might have to listen to them. But this way they can still ignore the voters and do what they like.
Here's a Politico Story on how the 'Town Halls' that congressmen are attending have erupted into massive protests and angry shouting matches:
Screaming constituents, protesters dragged out by the cops, congressmen fearful for their safety — welcome to the new town-hall-style meeting, the once-staid forum that is rapidly turning into a house of horrors for members of Congress.
That's music to my ears. I think if Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi were a little more frightened of the voting public, it would only help things.
