A few weeks (or was it days - it's been tough sledding recently) ago, Frithguild made mention of 'the big lie'. This is the political tactic of simply claiming that a tax isn't a tax, a fine isn't a fine, a penalty isn't a penalty, redistribution isn't redistribution, and that the poposed policy does not do, exactly what it's desigend to do. The President is doing it again. In fact, without the big lie, this President probably wouldn't have all that much to say.
The thing I hate about this is that if it were a Republican, the press would NEVER let him get away with the big lie. But since it's a Democrat the press simply repeats his claims by rote. And people then believe it.
the onyl way to counter 'the big lie' is to be as determined about spreading the truth, and Team Obama is about spreading the wealth. So... here are the facts about the Buffet Rule:
1. It won't raise any money because the rich would rather hide their money than let Obama take it.
2. It's not "fair" because the money has already been taxed once at the highest corporate tax rate in the world.
3. It IS redistribution. There really isn't any other way to say that.
4. "The Rich" who President Obama want's to punish for their success, already pay most of the taxes in dollar terms and on a percentage basis. Their regular rate is already higher than the rate on the poor, but as mentioned in item 1, they would rather hide their money than pay it.
5. It will hurt the economy and job growth (at least it would if it had even a remote chance of passing.)
Obama has been singing this song for years and America hasn't been interested. He knows it won't pass. Even he can't be that obtuse. So the question arises then - why is he still saying it?
The answer is that he knows that the people in the bottom income bracket, those people who contribute nothing and live off government largesse, are highly motivated by envy. They don't so much care about having more themselves (or they would go get a job) as much as they care about taking something away from the other guy who does.
That's Obama's primary constituency... the slackers... the losers. The people who aren't interested in getting ahead and are perfectly content to be behind so long as someone else does the work of pulling their cart. And Obama knows that if he demonizes "the rich" those slackers will get off the couch long enough to go down to the polls and vote for him.
These are the people who Obama thinks would be best to decide the future direction of the country. This human ballast. And whatever problems you may have with Mitt Romney, if you don't go out and vote for him, this is exactly who will.

Intrade has it 3-2 that the ballast is going to vote BO back in. I can't decide if that is depressingly high or a huge short, esp. given the media and incumbency advantage baked in. Maybe it's both? Where would you make that market currently?
Honestly? I'd make it at roughly 5 to 3 against him being reelected. That's valued in my mind as a forward contract not a future - delivery of the forward scheduled on election day. I think the odds may look better for him between here and there, but that's my call today.
The main reason I feel that way is that when you put Barack H. Obama on TV, people don't like what they see. Every time he goes on TV his ratings drop. Every time he opens his mouth people see how divisive, resentful, and hostile to America he is. And he isn't going to be able to hide until election day.
I think there are a lot of people out there who can't stand the man or his policies but have enough sense to never say so to the media or to a pollster for fear of being accused of [....and you know they're right...it's coming...] racism.
So these people will never show up on the data but on election day they'll be there.
Meanwhile, the only people who will support Obama are the unions, and the ballast that isn't already too dysfunctional to make it to the polls ("Was that yesterday?!"). That won't be enough to win him the election.
tom... i have been saying these things to my friends for the last fomo.. 1--he never has held a job so all he knows how to do is campaign. his whole cabinet has never been out in private world.2-- business hates his ass so much that if hes re elected itl be another fomo before theyl consider hiring which leaves us at best with the exact samec shit economy. 3---his only game is 99 vs 1... i think he considers himself a modern day hero in the mold of a robin hood... 4--as ive said several times the dumbing down of america has reached a tipping point where there are more of "them" than us.. and they are mutilplying really fast.. california is now 50% asia/latino....im really tired of paying for an unwed mother to have 7 kids by 3 diferent fathers.... i think its game over.. at best we hold the house or senate. if not the bad shit will happen really quick. moodys/s/p will be downgrading shit so fast your head will spin...i dont think romney ha a chance. maybe rubio or christy could help but doubt enough.i think we have lost our queen and the "ballast" is bout to say checkmate
tom .ill still say 51.5 to 48.5...your"ballast" dont care bout him on tv... they dont what he says when he opens his mouth. they just want their handout..its a simple equation.. 99 vs 1... unfortunately the repubs i fear dont know how to "push" his buttons...everytime he mentions swiss account jus say economy. when he says your rich jus say economy..when he says buffet shit jus say "shovel ready"800 bil pissed away... id keep mits commercials so simple that he gets flustered.. flip flop..id show how he got on senate floor and said we shouldnt raise the debt ceiling. .id run a commercial -so simple- that shows how the unemployment rate has drooped but not because the job market has improved but because folks have stopped looking. id run that one everyday... mitt needs to take a page outa clinton playbook and put it out there first. it neutralizes them..
First of all, Moody's may downgrade, but if they do, it will only be to maintain a semblance of credibility, and in the end it won't matter. The US rates will stay low relative to everywhere else - even if the Fed stops buying. I can explain why, but honestly, I don't have time. Take my word for it - I'm 100% certain about it.
Secondly, there have always been more dumb people than smart people (assuming that's what you mean by us and them) or more uneducated than educated. The question is a cultural one. If the new people learn to value things we think of as American, i have no problem with it. No one see's a big problem with the Japanese community in California.
The Filipino community and the Korean community don't cause problems, they build businesses. The Indian community we have in NJ are better citizens than their blue collar union member neighbors (and twice as smart). I'd sooner live in North Edison surrounded by people named Patel, than in Trenton with Italian and Irish Democrats, and I'd have lower crime, better schools, and a brighter future.
In other words, you should hate the sin, not the sinner. None of us is perfect.
i undertsand that more than likely we will always be the best looking horse in the glue factory. and i understand the asia contingent cause i see their kids studying on a sat nite when i go pick up chinese food.theyr cleaning up and studyingat same time. they understand the way to get ahead is with a brain. but i think the "dumbing" has acheived such size and speed itl overwhelm anything.. this election may come down to a small sliver of independents and women. BO carries the women ... ill pray for mitt but im counting on a shit economy for fomo. fomo.
i dont think we will but if we saw an all dems again i do think even bein the best lookin horse may not end but even taking us up to a 4% 10 yr would be very costly for our debt. ive seen ppl say as much as another 300-400 bil.. returning to clinton rates would blow us outa the water... i fear that odummy gets back in and then get an all dems 2 yrs later...watching nancy and harry again would be horrific.

So why does the big lie live on so well? Simple - follow the money. Redistribution appeals just fine to the ballast, but it would not exist as the object for the big lie, if it did not appeal to solidly established interests. Out tax system is based on income, not wealth. It keeps a thumb on the heads of the upwardly mobile. Who does this appeal to? Well, who wants to be free from competition and the disruption that result from investments made by those moving up the economic scale. So you won't see a big hue and cry when dashing liberty protects the Warren Buffets. The big lie here is that Buffet will not be touched by the tax named after him. Instead, he will get the pick of failing businesses to buy. Liberalism is the sharpest tool of entrenched interests.
frith... very well said, this tax may raise a bil/yr.. im wondering bout the other 1400 bil we will spend this yr that we have borrowed from all your kids.where des that come from.???
The Big Lie being repeated this very minute...
Millionaire's Tax is a swansong...
Obama quotes from today's campaign speech:
"2/3rds of all millionnaire's support this plan..."
"It is not just about wealth redistribution"
Is it really just me? Does anyone out there think he's qualified to make "investments" on behalf of the American taxpayer? Has anything he's done worked out well?
Fannie & Freddie? GM? the Green Bankruptcy dujour? The Teacher's unions? Have ANY OF THESE THINGS paid off?
true Tom
however the response you will likely get from the dimwits:
"Bush's Fault"
"BBBBut Romney is just as bad"
"It's unfair" (Particularly vague as to what exactly is unfair)
"There is no Republican Plan"
"Si, Se Puede" (Trans;ated : mean's "If, we can" since there is no accent following Si`
tom . he doesnt know jackshit but it doesnt matter to the ballast that get their freebies from him..explain to me why the jewish community overwhelmingly votesliberal. the asian article ??? a group of people that usually work their asses off and their kids who usually beat the crap outa us in spelling bees and math competitions and yet they vote majority for libtards .. why????????????????
ikaika.......ill really liked timmy g saying at the hearing..." we dont have a plan but we know we dont like yours"....and he got away with it???? lb media just killed it. id have that soundbite on every commercial.
The media salivates for, and the executive branch feeds them class warfare, and in turn both sell tickets to it.
sad but true
i hope for alot of things but 1--- i hope all conservs wether tea party or not get off their ass to vote for romney.. he may not be everyones choice but hes hell alot better than the other choice.."small steps" people.as the stones would say --- you cant alwyas get what you want but sometimes you get what you need... also i hope the repubs get proactive and take the fight to him... and imean now!!! hes gonna be on tv every day. --in fact he jus got off...take the fight to him. i would engage newt in the talks because i do think hes an intelligent man...but BO is so predictable that the repubs can head him off with some good commercials. BO has only one playbook. beat him to the spot and hurt him.LEAVE A MARK BEFORE HE STARTS USING THE RACE CARD.
