- Missing Milton Friedman

This election is going to be a referendum on Capitalism. And the free market has never had a better advocate than him.

I continue to blame the entire rise of the 'new left' on Dr. Friedman. Because if he hadn't gone and died.....

Great piece.. Common sense talk bout something I hadn't really thought about. The left has Paul Volcker.... They had him for Jimmy and now Barry.. I hope the unifying theme here will be once again Volcker loses his job after 1 term.

I wonder how Mr. Friedman would be treated today? The Left has become far more virulent in its quest to silence free market / low tax advocates.

Look at Art Laffer: The man received death threats, had his home vandalized, and someone killed his pets.

Frithguild and I (and Vishnu and a few others... but FG and I rode in the same car) were at a shooting event last weekend, and this came up in discussion.

I don't think Dr. Friedman was indictable by the left. They always hated him, just have a look at the interaction between him and that silly leftist woman during Free To choose where she tried to blame him for Chile.

but there was something in his manner and language that made it impossible to attack him in the traditional leftist way. they couldn't depict him unfairly as a monster as they have done recently to others who spoke of a similar objective truth (not naming any names).

He had cracked the code of speaking to liberals in a way that they couldn't help but understand. He said things that got past their insecurity and defensiveness and made them see the truth.

On the drive I was explaining that I wish I could do the same.

The few times i have now seen/listen to Derbs he sounds like a very soft spoken intelligent non threatening kind of man.. However he cant get through very well.. Do you think Friedman could or has the libtards morphed in such a way that nothing gets through?Like abad microbe that you have under control until one piece of rna/dna morphs and its off and running.Bad bug.

John Derbyshire is a very interesting, intelligent soft spoken and reasonable man. He and I have been friends for a few years now, and I can say without a moment's hesitation that he doesn't have even a single drop of malice within him anywhere. He most certainly is not the monster that the left has cartoonishly tried to depict him as.

But I think he'd be the first to tell you that he is sometimes unaware of the emotional context that others will use to frame his words. I think it has to do with being English, but he has a kind of emotional tone deafness.

He's not cruel or selfish that I've ever seen. He’s not being unkind. He's just sometimes unaware that people will be upset or have any emotional reaction at all to something he says. In his mind stating any fact should be no more emotionally compelling than saying 2+2=4. No one get’s upsets about 2+2, nor should they. And if he says something else that he believes is a fact, he thinks it should be treated with the same sort of neutrality.

I think if he were aware that people would be upset about something he’s discussing he would do his best to frame it in a way that wouldn't get them so worked up. He'd try - simply out of a sense of good manners - to be as ... genteel... about it as he could. But it would not stop him from stating facts. Facts, to John, are facts, and are therefore not subject to qualification in and of themselves.

He is a man of science, logic, and reason - like Dr. Sheldon Cooper on the Big Bang Theory. If he's offensive he doesn't know it, and certainly doesn't mean it, but sometimes he can't help it.

I don't think liberals have changed. I think Dr. Friedman was an exception, and the rest of us are not. He had a special gift for communication with them that most lack.

Shame he wasnt cloned..A friend of mine and I sometimes believe that God is watching mankind and now and then gets frustrated with us and sends us someone extra special to sorta kick start mankind.Like Einstein.1905 and sorting through patents and bam!!! thanx God. Newton with gravity equations that are still used in rocket launches.Maybe God sent Friedman and it helped but the rest of us dropped the ball and the left picked it up.From your description of Derbs he is what i would call a human Spock even though Spock was half human.Though Sheldon did reach for the girls hand when the rocket lifted off.ruh roh Sheldon.Cant wait for his rocket to want to "liftoff".He will catatonic after.
