- A Little Too "Sky-Net" For Me

My more libertarian friends are all hiding under their chairs this morning, since CBS is reporting that soon drones will be able to kill without human intervention:

“Before they were blind, deaf and dumb,” Mark Maybury, chief scientist for the U.S. Air Force, told AFP. “Now we’re beginning to make them to see, hear and sense.”

Ronald Arkin, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, believes that drones will soon be able to kill enemies on their own independently.

while I'm less concerned with mistakes by the software, I'm very concerned about accountability. If someone is going to be killed by the government I always want there to be someone who has to be held accountable for that death. I want there to be someone who has to live with that decision. I never want to be in a situation where the person being held accountable for a death is some software engineer who wrote a piece of code 16 months ago, in a basement of some Defense department building in Virginia somewhere.

If someone is going to die, a man should pull the trigger. It doesn't matter to me what gun he uses.

Amen, spot-on again Tom. We're getting into this weird place where liberals and conservatives, at least those with a sense of proportion and morality (not trying to be oxymoronic) are going to start meeting in the middle and this is one place to start. Robotic warfare is extremely troubling on so many levels. So long as it is being used against "them" everything seems alright. Unfortunately we here @ RFNJ know that government, at every level, fucks up nearly EVERYTHING it touches, so I don't see how this technology is not going to be used against us at some point. Absolutely frightening. Forget self-knowing machines... I'm scared shitless of the ones that are under control of humans let alone the coming Skynet generation.
Here's people who are talking about this problem, again this is a government-created problem and it transcends political orientation, stripes, colors, etc: http://americanempireproject.com/
Writers who are a member of this project have helped clarify for me why our domestic agenda is so liberal and out to lunch and simultaneously, why our foreign agenda is consumed with war, war, war and more more. All of it paid for with money we don't have.
I don't want drones. I don't want an omnipotent federal government that can't run wars or domestic policy. I will continue to advocate less government on every level and what's amazing is how my liberal friends are starting, when forced by reason, to say... "Wait a minute... all this drone stuff is going on under Obama? But he's the Peace President... why is killer drone technology proliferating under his watch... this isn't what I voted for." I deal with liberals like I do children, slowly, repetitiously, w/simple logic loops broken down into bite-size pieces... but I think we have to as we need to get together on issues like this. Skynet drones aren't good for anyone no matter what their political stripes.

This would be he old Mad magazine. Spy vs Spy...... Somewhere there has to be someone working in a garage on a handheld EMP device. The dude probably looks like he has tasered himself a lot.

Ikaika you are right..I would leave this alone...If R&R runs with this it could increase the turnout for BHO...Old news and it is what it is. .The other thing I see happening is (conspiracy) that the media wants the polls to tighten up so that BHO turnout will be bigger.
