- The "Univeral Background Check" Bait And Switch

I can't think of a more blatantly transparent political bait and switch than the silly discussion of "Universal Background Checks".

Everyone just loves the idea. But I wish we had a poll that could tell us how many understand it. For instance, I doubt that all those people who feel so warm and fuzzy about universal background checks realize that it will absolutely require universal registration of all firearms - an act which has always preceded any nationwide firearms ban. That hasn't been raised at the moment (certainly not by "mayors against guns"...the friends of devoutly anti-gun Mike Bloomberg that sponsored the poll). But since it's the only way to make the 'universal' part of universal background checks work, it absolutely will be a requirement. And since no one believes it will prevent any crime or violence, that "universal registration" is very likely the whole point in the first place.

"Well how do you expect us to give you the background checks you want without giving us the power to do it for you?" Our slime ball lying "political leaders" and press propagandists will say.

I hope the NRA gets on this issue before NY, NJ, CA, and IL all implement it, because it will be a big inconvenience for me. I'm not so worried about seeing it happen nationally.

The whole trick for the totalitarian left is to find a way to say the thing they wanted all along in a new way that polls well. They then get the press to endlessly chime in that it's what 'everyone wants'. This is the best example I've seen in recent days. Had Obamacare ever tested over 50% they'd have said it about that too. But in this case it really isn't the background checks they're after, it's universal firearms registration. This is just a warm and fuzzy way for them to say it.

The incremental march to totalitarianism rolls ever onward.
