-"Say it ain't so, Hank!"

I was huge Hank Aaron fan growing up. What little-leaguer in the 1970's wasn't rooting for Hammerin' Hank to break the Babe's career record?
Before the steroid era, if your team was in the National League you shuddered every time you had to play Atlanta... because of Hank Aaron. Even when he did jack one off your favorite team (I was a Mets Fan) you were in awe of the man when he beat you. You collected his baseball cards and you bought his posters. Sure he was past his prime when he made home-run history, but that was "The Record" and it wasn't tainted by dope or gambling. I always hated The Cincinnati Reds but I feel that Pete Rose deserves some kind of recognition for his achievements as a player rather than his folly as a manager.
When 'roids became part of baseball, you weren't impressed with Mac, Sosa or Barry Bonds. You were disgusted at the freak-show baseball had become. I didn't want to see Bonds break Hank's records because of the fact that Hank did it by the book, fair n' square.
I always rooted for Hank to be a manager, but you couldn't blame racisim on that since several non-whites became managers and even GM's without having  much of a player career.
The little-leaguer in me was disappointed today. Hank decided to play the race-card for the Nixon of our time. Say it ain't so, Hank... Say it ain't so...
Where was this guy when Condi Rice was being called a Gap-Tooth Picaninny or  Powell an Uncle Tom, or even the great Clarence Thomas being set-up and lynched by the liberal media?

I guess my dad was right. Athletes aren't always the best role models and will most likely disappoint you once you begin to earn for yourself.
I hope I never have to write an article on Bob Gibson because he'll take my head off!
